Match Report
I am not really a believer in deja vu but Brentwood seems to like to practice this mysterious art whenever they visit E4. This is the art of scoring at the end of each half.
The game started with the well organised Brentwood forwards dominating the rucks and mauls. What ball Ching got was quickly turned over by Brentwoods counter-rucking. To Chings credit they did run the ball well on occasions, but failed to breach the Brentwood defence. At 11 minutes Brentwood got the ball out to their backs, and following a good kick-through which eluded the Ching defence, their winger pounced on the ball to score. The first half was looking to be a 5 point lead when at 24 minutes Brentwood got the ball out to their backs, and a couple of looping moves later scored a great try to lead 10-0.
Ching started the 2nd half with greater intent, and were recycling the ball quicker, nullifying the Brentwood counter-rucking. Ching got close to the line, and after Brentwood were penalised on their line, Ching tapped and ran the ball with Max scoring at close range. Matt Lumb converted to close the gap to 10-7. For the rest of the game Ching threatened but never managed to get free of the Brentwood defence. There were great performances by Syrus, Jack and Jordan who showed real impact from the bench. Sam Mellen, Matt Marie and Nick Arnold were always a threat to Brentwood. Ching also took the chance to blood in new players with both Harry Gilly and Sam Clark showing a lot of promise. With the game so close and Ching trying to score from every opportunity, we thought that we may just edge it. At 24 mins Brentwood, against the run of play forced Ching to clear their lines. The kick did not find touch and once again Brentwood took their opportunity and scored their 3rd try which was converted to leave the final score at 17-7.
