Match Report
This was always going to be a tough game for the boys, particularly
only 2 weeks after playing top-of-the-table Chelmsford. Westcliff lost
26-0 to Chelmsford at the beginning of the season and were determined
not to lose another game. They treated Ching with respect, bringing
their strongest squad and constantly rotating their players throughout
the game. Ching conceded 4 trys in the first half, and went in at
half-time 22-0 down. Many other teams would have crumbled, especially
after conceding a further 2 trys early on in the second half. Ching
however have a never say die attitude and from 8 minutes were showing
Westcliff the way. After winning a scrum on the Westcliff half, Sam
Robbens drew the defender passed to Ben who accelerated past his
marker to score, converting his own try. Ching then conceded a further
break-away try, then at 16 mins won a scrum on the Westcliff 22. Sam
Robbens picked the ball up, linked with Max who forced his way over.
Westcliff then began to dominate the last few minutes of the game and
scored 2 quick trys to bring the game to an end. Their coaches coneded
that only Chelmsford had scored more than 1 try against them all
season, so good work by Ching !
All of the boys played their hearts out, but Brandon, Nick, Sam
Fitzgerald and Sam Robbens all had great games. The only critical
thing was not all of the Ching tackles were effective, and with a
strong team like Westcliff, this can be fatal. Man-of-the match as
voted for by Westcliff went to Max for his strong tackling, harrying
runs and leadership.
