JOHN WILLIAM'S MEXICO SEVENS

Hi all and I hope you are all OK Update for those who didn't watch the games live. First we were given loads of kit, track suits, trainers, Polo's etc, us rugby players love a bit off stash. We travelled to Mexico city via Panama and arrived at the hotel which was a 4* and OK We travelled to the stadium the next morning after getting passes etc. Our first game was against ST Lucia which was easy and won 54 0 second game against Barbados who did fancy themselves but we won 27 5 third game was against Mexico who had a large and loud group of fans with flags and a band. We played our best and won 25 5 and now was in the quarters against Cayman the next day Evening meal and ice baths for the boys but Rolly the tech advisor who had coached the Hurricanes in NZ found a Mexican restaurant which had dancers and a mexican band. Believe it or not they had cock fighting also as part of the show. Day two and an easy win against Bahamas 24 0 which then put us in to the semis The boys still hadn't played to the patterns that I had coached which was a concern but we were winning Now the semi against Martinique who had looked good all tournament easy again 27 5 and now in the final Trinidad and Tobago have lost to Guyana the last 4 competitions so had to get the boys up for it. The winners qualify for the Commonwealth games in India and the USA leg of the IRB world sevens in Vegas. But being in the final we did qualify for the central America and caribbean games which includes Argentina, Brazil etc, so that was a good result. I had told the boys to play wide as our wingers had pace over the Guyana wingers, Within 2 Min's our winger was injured and had to be substituted. The players we put on I had been worried about and within seconds he missed a tackle and we were 7 nil down We then came back and scored but missed the conversion. Then another injury and a second players again not up to it had to be put on. They then scored and now down 12 5. again we fort back with a converted try and now 12 10. 30 seconds to go and we had a 4 man overlap but the subbed player decided to be a hero which is what I was worried about and did not pass but took contact and lost the ball, game over The T and T RFU were please that we had qualified for the CAC games there first but I wasn't and knew it was there to be won. So back now and video and debrief with the players and RFU commitee. The players are soft in the body and head and I am going to recommend that we concentrate on the young players for the future. Thanks for all your e-mails and text messages
